Upgradable weapons and armor!

So I was wondering if there was a way to use gold, pvp points, or shards in a way to upgrade weapons and armor. I love the potential of this and it's killing me that it's not yet implemented. I understand this could make certain people a bit overpowered, and i'm sure you'd like to avoid that, but hey if a person has earned the ability to upgrade why not? I feel the potential for a more customized and unique dragon is there if this ability was available, is it something that could happen?

Perhaps the uniqueness of the item/armor in question has more of an ability to be upgraded based on its rarity?
